Na mozog tínedžerov v období dospievania aktívne pôsobí nebývalé množstvo hormónu estrogénu, resp. testosterónu (podľa toho či ide o dievča alebo chlapca), ktorý ovplyvňuje náladu či vzrušenie človeka a odkiaľ pramení podstata toho, že mladí ľudia vyhľadávajú napätie, senzácie, adrenalín. Týka sa to nielen extrémnych športov, ale všetkého, čo má príchuť nedovoleného, pretože zakázané ovocie najlepšie chuti, ako sú cigarety, alkohol, drogy atď. A keď sa k rozbúreným hormónom priráta nedozretý mozog, ktorý sa vyvíja do 20 až 25 roku veku, zrodí sa priam šialená kombinácia. V puberte sa človek správa nezrelo, hravo, neznesie poúčanie, a to dospievajúcich často burcuje až ku agresivite. Prednosť dávajú vzťahu k nezmyselným dobrodružstvám, neraz hazardujúcim so životom. Puberta je obdobím hľadania samého seba, s čím súvisí aj dôležitý a veľmi častý prejav – experimentovanie v najrôznejších podobách. Tínedžeri tak experimentujú v lepšom prípade s oblečením, účesmi, v horšom prípade rizikom pri aktivitách, ktoré im zoceľujú odvahu a dvíhajú sebavedomie, ale aj adrenalín v krvi a čo je hlavné neznášajú, keď im do toho niekto „kecá“. A tobôž nie rodičia, ktorí sa o svojich dorastajúcich potomkov „len“ boja a pocit strachu si tínedžeri pravdepodobne uvedomujú najmenej. Odvaha im nechýba, len či majú dostatok rozumu na to, aby odhadli nielen vlastné možnosti, ale aj riziko a zodpovednosť za seba a svoje konanie. To je neraz až priveľmi sebecké, pretože pritom nemyslia na rodičov, ktorí im adrenalínové počínanie nie vždy schvaľujú a veľakrát o ňom ani netušia. Tínedžeri však riešia špecifické problémy a majú oproti svojim rodičom špecifické nazeranie na svet a jeho vnímanie. A od svojich rodičov (keď boli v ich veku) sa veru poriadne líšia. Nuž čo, iná doba, iné nároky, iné záľuby a zábava a čím väčší adrenalín, tým lepšie.

Pri adrenalínových extrémnych športoch ich láka predovšetkým veľká rýchlosť, výšky, nebezpečenstvo a akrobatické kúsky, napr. extrémne lyžovanie či snowboard na prudkých svahoch a v úzkych koridoroch s vysokým lavínovým nebezpečím, či freeriding, čo je spúšťanie po strmých svahoch a špeciálne upravenom bicykli, kde si testujú mieru vlastného strachu a odvahy. K adrenalínovým aktivitám však možno zaradiť aj prvé sexuálne zážitky, tajné fajčenie, prvé skúsenosti s alkoholom a drogami, jazda bez vodičského preukazu na otcovom aute, ktorý o tom ani nevie. Adrenalínové môže byť aj záškoláctvo či malé krádeže s partiou a pod. Mladí experimentujú a riskujú aj vlastný život niekedy z frajeriny, alebo preto, že ani netušia o aké veľké nebezpečenstvo ide. Do tejto skupiny patrí „hra“ s pyrotechnikou, lezenie na vagóny či stĺpy elektrického vedenia, prebehovanie cez koľajnice pred blížiacim sa vlakom, azda na neosvetlenom bicykli, ale aj stopovanie, schôdzky na slepo, pouličné graffiti.
Možné následky
Rizikové správanie tínedžerov so sebou prináša viac či menej závažné následky, ktoré si často neuvedomujú, alebo si ich nechcú pripustiť a vedome ich podceňujú. Aby sa boli schopní rozhodnúť pre bezpečné správanie, alebo dokonca dokázali odmietnuť ponuku rovesníkov zúčastniť sa rizikových aktivít, mali by byť dostatočne informovaní o možných následkoch. Tie môžu byť predovšetkým zdravotné, psychické (depresia, závislosti), ekonomické (vandalizmus, sprejerstvo, krádeže) až trestno-právne (kriminalita mládeže). Dobré mienené rady a varovania pritom púšťajú jedným uchom dnu a druhým von. Dokonca ich nedokážu dostatočne odradiť ani tragické prípady z médií. Známe porekadlo však hovorí, že dovtedy sa „chodí do džbánom po vodu, až sa ucho utrhne“, len aby potom nebolo veľmi neskoro.
